Dear Friends,
The reality of climate change and a warming planet is hitting home with full force. In the coming days, we expect record-breaking high temperatures and extraordinarily dangerous fire conditions.
Part of our reaction needs to be common sense. Please take the warnings of public health officials seriously and make a plan to stay safe during this extreme weather event.
We all need to drink lots of fluids and do our part to ensure people know where to access water and cooling stations.
And for heaven's sake, don't leave pets or children in cars in this heat.
The intense heat also makes fire conditions more dangerous. Too many fires are started by people's reckless behavior. So please, be careful, and follow local guidelines for fire safety.
As this weather continues, monitor alerts for air quality, the extreme heat, and any need to conserve water and electricity.
While this week will put us to the test, I'm confident that we can meet this challenge if we exercise good sense and look out for neighbors, friends, and especially those less fortunate.
