Dear Friends,
Throughout the pandemic, I’ve pushed for direct cash assistance to get people the help they need, when they need it. In addition to the direct cash payments that Democrats sent to American families in recent months, we made a historic change to the Child Tax Credit.
Rather than waiting to provide families support when they file annual taxes, Democrats passed a new provision that increased the amount of money working families receive and, most importantly, made it so that families would get some of that money each month.
Starting today, this means that working families across the country can get up to $300 per child each month through the end of the year.
This historic change will have historic impacts.
By putting more money in the pockets of hardworking parents to pay for childcare, food, rent, and other expenses, this law is expected to cut child poverty in half across the country.
In our 3rd Congressional District, nearly 140,000 children will benefit, and 10,300 children will be lifted out of poverty.
As for how to access this benefit, most working families should get their monthly payments automatically beginning today, July 15th, with no further action required. Those who qualify for this benefit will get their remaining expanded Child Tax Credit when they file their 2021 tax return.
Families who did not file a tax return for 2019 or 2020, and who did not use the IRS Non-filers tool last year to sign up for the Economic Impact Payments, should go online and use the IRS Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign-up Tool to sign up today.
