Dear [firstname],
Health care decisions should be made by people in consultation with their medical professionals and anyone else whom they choose to seek input from – not the government.
For years, state legislatures across America have introduced and enacted a host of extremely restrictive bills that allow politicians to push their way into people’s private medical decisions. Earlier this month we saw a horrific law go into effect in Texas which would ban abortion after 6 weeks and allow any citizen to sue physicians who are providing this care. Already more states are following suit to restrict choice and criminalize medical decisions.
The consequences are grave, especially for people of color, young people, those living in rural areas, and low-income people. Robbing individuals of the right to make choices about their own bodies, futures, and families is completely unacceptable. It’s clear that Congress must step up and stop these attacks on reproductive freedom.
That’s why today, I voted to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act in the U.S. House of Representatives, landmark legislation to secure the right to reproductive care across America, by enshrining into law the vital protections of Roe v. Wade.
This legislation couldn’t come at a more critical time. The Supreme Court recently announced it will hear oral arguments in a case challenging Roe in December. I have already joined an amicus brief to the Court to urge the justices to follow precedent and uphold Roe.
We can’t turn back the clock on reproductive freedom. I’m doing everything I can to urge my colleagues in the Senate to finish what we started today in the House and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, so we can send it to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law. The stakes are too high to give up.
Courage,
Earl
