Dear Friends,
This is a pivotal moment.
For decades, families were struggling with lower wages and rising costs. The coronavirus pandemic and a slew of deadly climate disasters made things even harder. Further inaction on our climate and economic crises is not an option.
So we got to work in Congress. And this morning, we passed the Build Back Better Act.
This legislation will go down in history as one of Congress’ most transformational investments in our communities. It will save most families more than half of their current spending on child care, establish universal pre-school for all 3- and 4-year-olds, and give every American four weeks of paid parental, family caregiving, and medical leave.
That’s not all. The Build Back Better Act will expand Medicare to provide our seniors with hearing care, finally cap the price of insulin, and dramatically lower health insurance premiums.
But Americans know that getting more money in their pockets now isn’t going to be enough to create a strong foundation for our future. If we want to protect the vitality of our communities, we also need bold climate action.
That’s why I used my position on the House Ways and Means Committee to make sure that the Build Back Better Act will help us speed up our transition away from fossil fuels, improve energy efficiency, and cut pollution. I’m especially pleased that I successfully included the reinstatement of a decades-expired Superfund tax, which will require polluting corporations to pay to clean up their toxic legacies.
Today, the House proved that when we ask the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share, we can deliver what American families need to prosper. Now it’s time for the Senate to join us in passing this groundbreaking legislation, so we can continue with our work of rebuilding America.
