Dear Friends,
This week, I visited the White House to celebrate the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) being signed into law. I caught up with longtime friends and clean energy champions Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts and Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham from New Mexico. We reflected on the significance of the legislation, which contains the single greatest federal investment in climate action in our nation’s history. In total, it will put the United States on a path toward a 40 percent reduction in emissions by 2030.
Several of my provisions to increase our investments in solar and wind energy, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, clean manufacturing, and cleaning up toxic Superfund legacy sites in communities were signed into law. I am already working on the implementation of these provisions to ensure they make a real difference for American families.
In Oregon, clean energy programs are already having an impact. Last week Speaker Pelosi and Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici joined me in meeting with Oregonians on the front lines of fighting the climate crisis, reducing energy costs, and improving quality of life for homeowners. We heard from Sammie Lewis, a Portland homeowner, who worked with the Community Energy Project and the Energy Trust of Oregon to install rooftop solar at low cost to her home. It was moving to hear Ms. Lewis share her joy in seeing how much her monthly energy bills have declined since her solar array was installed.
Consumers can get more information about their potential savings to purchase an electric vehicle or make energy efficiency upgrades to their residences here.
I came to Congress with a mission to make the federal government a better partner to local communities so they can be more livable, healthy, and economically secure. By taking advantage of these programs, learning about them, and forming the partnerships needed for their successful implementation we will make unprecedented progress toward fulfilling the fundamental premise of this mission.
