Dear Friends,
Just under a year ago, President Biden laid out a bold vision to bring the country together and make progress on the issues most important to Americans during his first official State of the Union address. President Biden’s second State of the Union address tonight was a clear display of the amazing progress we have made.
The Inflation Reduction Act, the single largest investment in climate action in our nation’s history, put us on track to cut our carbon emission by 40% by 2030. It will save Americans $288 billion on health care over the next ten years and finally allow Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs. I was delighted to author several important climate provisions, including my production and investment tax credits to bolster wind and solar projects, my legislation to incentivize energy-efficiency upgrades in commercial buildings, and my legislation to reinstate the Superfund Tax to finally make polluters pay to clean up their toxic legacies.
The Inflation Reduction Act came on the heels of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, a $550 billion investment to repair our nation’s roads, bridges, airports and more. Several key provisions I authored to help Oregon improve our public transit systems, enhance the safety of our streets, get lead pipes out of our schools, protect us from wildfires, and expand access to broadband were included.
Then there is the PACT Act, which will finally ensure our veterans receive the health care the deserve; the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major gun violence prevention legislation in nearly 30 years; the Respect for Marriage Act, to protect same-sex and interracial marriage; and the CHIPS Act, which will bolster domestic manufacturing and strengthen our supply chain. These bills came on the heels of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, an unprecedented investment in our nation’s failing infrastructure.
This legislative record does not begin to convey the strength of our economic recovery. Unemployment is at its lowest in 50 years. Wages are up. 12 million jobs have been created since President Biden took office, the fasted job growth in our nation’s history. This record stands in stark comparison to President Trump, who left office with 3 million fewer jobs than when he started.
And we aren’t done yet. Now is the time to finish the job—to build an economy that works for all, ensure the federal government is a real partner in combatting the housing crisis, finally end the failed war on drugs, codify the right to reproductive freedom, and more.
With so much more to accomplish, it is unfortunate that the new House Majority is focused not on policies that matter to the American public but investigating the President’s son’s laptop. Or sending us into an economic crisis by threatening to not pay of the federal government’s debt. Or putting in place a 30% federal sales tax.
I am happy to work with anyone who is interested in making progress on the issues that matter. I will not, however, compromise our fundamental values. Instead, I am committed to finishing what we started, to create communities that are safe, healthy, and economically secure. I am confident that Democrats and President Biden will continue making progress.
